A Brief History of Smith Funeral Home

Smith Funeral Home began operating around 1928 in Fort Payne by Jefferson Mack Smith, who was identified in the obituary as Reverend J. M. Smith. In 1940, the funeral home was renamed Anderson & McBryar Funeral Home after it was purchased by its director, George L. Anderson, and his business partner Lewis McBryar. In 1943, Anderson’s share was purchased by McBryar and the business was renamed McBryar Funeral Home. McBryar’s daughter Gladys married a man named Sherman C. Moore, who took over running the funeral home from McBryar in 1945. In 1955, Sherman Moore moved the business from Fort Payne to Trenton, Georgia and renamed it Moore Funeral Home. It is still operated in Trenton today by descendants of Sherman Moore and Gladys McBryar. Moore Funeral Home recently handled the service of my late aunt Nellie Moore.
