Newman J. Albright and S. Elizabeth Scott were enumerated in the 1870 United States Census six months after their December 1869 marriage. J. C. Thompson, the Assistant Marshal of Cleburne County, Alabama, enumerated the Albrights on 26 July 1870 in Township 15, Range 12. The nearest post office was Edwardsville.

Albright Family, 1870 Census

Newman was recorded as “Newton” Albright — J. C. Thompson apparently misheard his name. Newman’s age at last birthday was 27, which would place his birth around 1843. His state of birth was reported as Alabama. He was probably born in old Benton County, Alabama, as that’s where his parents and he were recorded on the 1850 census. Newman’s occupation was farmer and the farm was valued at $100, about $2,088.30 in 2021 dollars.

Elizabeth was recorded by her middle name. Her first name began with the letter S, as seen on her marriage record and the 1850 census, but the full name remains a mystery. Her age at last birthday was 25, which would place her birth around 1845. Her state of birth was Georgia, likely Carroll County since that’s where her parents were recorded on the 1840 census. Elizabeth’s occupation was “keeping house.”

Elizabeth apparently died shortly after this census, though no death or burial records have been found. There was no mention of Elizabeth nor any heirs in her father Jesse’s 1882 probate records or her mother Senia’s 1901 probate records. Newman would marry Nancy Clayton in 1872, proving this marriage had ended by then.

Madison Albright was Newman’s younger brother. His age at last birthday was 21 and he was born in Alabama, probably Benton County. His occupation was farm laborer. Madison would marry Elizabeth’s younger sister Nancy Caroline Scott in 1871.
