There was a man in Alabama with the amusing name of Early Andrew Jackson Pounds, though to friends and family he was simply Dack. He was born 5 August 1840 in Benton County. Mr Pounds was married three times.

First Marriage

Early’s first marriage was to Miss Eliza J. Scott on 12 November 1868 in Cleburne County. Eliza was a daughter of Jesse M. Scott and Senia P. Malone.

Early and Eliza can be found together on the 1870 Census for Cleburne County, Alabama. There, he was enumerated as Andrew Pounds, age 29, married white farmer with an estate valued at $300 (about $5,871 in 2020 dollars). Eliza was 22 and keeping house. Their young son Newman Pounds was 10/12 with his birth month given as July. There was also a 19 years old woman residing with them, name recorded as Julia Poid, born in Georgia. I’m not certain if Julia was related. She could be the Julia Boid listed amongst the family of John Boid on the next page of the census.

Early and Eliza would have one more child together. Margaret Ann Lula Pounds, a daughter, was born on 27 February 1871 in Cleburne County. Eliza died shortly after Lula’s birth, perhaps even during childbirth, but I’ve found no record of her death.
