Just so you don’t think it’s all obituaries and census records around stately Graham Ancestry, here is an article from the 5 October 1972 edition of The Odessa American of Odessa, Texas, chronicling a get-together of a local sorority.

Mu Delta Hosts Social In Crane

CRANE (Special) – Mu Delta of Epsilon Sigma Alpha^[1] met Tuesday, Sept. 19 for a social.

Members enjoyed playing games presented by Mrs. S. C. Lipscomb, Jr.

Mrs. E. C. Clayton^[2] made colorful favors to be taken to the hospital^[3]. Each member will do this throughout the year.

Mrs. A. D. Jones was hostess with a very attractive table arrangement.

Members present were: Mrs. E. C. Clayton; Mrs. B. C. Cottingham; Mrs. Pete Peterson; Mrs. S. C. Lipscomb, Jr.; Mrs. Durwood Jones; Mrs. A. D. Jones; Mrs. Frank Brown; Mrs. Claude Mills; Mrs. W. A. Huckabee; and Mrs. Eddie Coker^[4] was a guest.

[1] Epsilon Sigma Alpha is an international service organization “where members develop meaningful friendships, find their passion for community service, and continue on the path of lifelong learning.” They have both community and collegiate chapters. Since Crane, Texas does not have a college or university, Mu Delta was likely a community chapter. Mu Delta appears to be inactive – it is not listed with the active chapters on ESA’s web site.

[2] “Mrs. E. C. Clayton” was Virginia Carter, the wife of Elbert Claburn Clayton. Elbert was the son of Willliam Henry Clayton, Jr, and Dessie Ann Coker.

[3] Taking the colorful favors to the patients at the hospital was likely Mu Delta’s service project that year. The hospital was probably Crane Memorial Hospital.

[4] “Mrs. Eddie Coker” was Shirley A. Coker (maiden name unknown), the first wife of Eddie Lamar Coker.  Eddie was the son of Cebern Perry Coker and Eithel Olie Copeland, the grandson of Mancel Coker and California Cypert, and the nephew of Dessie Ann Coker.
