I found this obituary in the 12 April 1902 edition of the Marshall Mountain Wave newspaper.  I’m not exactly certain which William A. Watts this was, as there were a few of them.

Wm A. Watts

Wm A. Watts of Red River, died on the 27th ult.[1]  Uncle Bill was one of the first settlers of this county;  he came here before the Indian ceased to chase the dear through the forest and the cane grew rank in every bottom.

Notes

[1]  “Ult” is an abbreviation for “ultimo”, a Latin word which means “in or of the month preceding the present one”, according to Dictionary.com.  So, this William died on 27 March 1902.
